Blog April 21, 2016
Hello everybody! Joni and I are just back from John C. Campbell in Brasstown, NC and Stateliness Friends in Richmond, IN. We had a great time and saw a lot of people make some really nice baskets. It was my first time to Campbell (Joni’s second) and I am here to tell you that we are ready to go back in the Fall of 2017. What a great place to relax and learn to make a basket…or to turn wood….or to play a Ukulele..or to paint watercolors…or be a blacksmith….or any number of other things. We met some great people and helped them make a lot of nantucket baskets, many for the first time. A word of advice…eat your meals (family style of course) at a table with few or no Blacksmiths if you want to get anything to eat!
On a sadder note, we met with John C. Campbell Director Jan Davidson shortly after the state of NC passed their Transgender Bathroom bill. He was very concerned about how this would affect future attendance and philanthropy. In fact, in the one day since the bill had passed, John C. Campbell had seen promised support retracted. I am sure you have heard about in the news since then. Just please let me be clear to everyone out there, everyone in NC is not a narrow minded knucklehead. There are lot of good modern people in our state whom I hope will not be judged negatively by the actions of a few zealous elected officials. They do not speak for all of us in the state of NC.
Whew! Sorry about that, but when you have a blog, it’s hard to stay off your soap box!
Anyway, then we were on to Stateline Friends in Indiana. The convention had over 400 weavers, teachers and vendors and we want to give a big THANK YOU to Pam Feix and the rest of the guild who did an outstanding job coordinating the event. Anyone who wants to see how a Larger Than Average Basket Convention can be run really well should go and check it out. We heartily encourage everyone to attend in the future. The fried chicken lunch on Thursday is reason enough!
On the way home, Joni and I visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. I have been telling everyone that we held off going until they voted Deep Purple IN (finally!), but really, we would have gone anyway. It is a very well done history of Rhythm and Blues/Gospel/Folk music leading to today’s Rock and Roll. A good history lesson even if you don’t like loud music!
Remember…..It’s a Beautiful Day….Don’t let it slip away….
Until Next time…….Have a little fun with everything you do!
David
